Speakers will address issues of the scientific use of three-colour photography, its iconic protagonists, and its most representative imperial and colonial expeditions. They explore the multitude of photographic processes the term “three-colour photography” encompasses, ranging from Color Paget, Sanger-Shepherd, Miethe’s System, Bleach-Out methods etc. along with the material and epistemological conditions which engendered them.

This Symposium seeks to remedy the historical and theoretical vacuum around three-colour photography, opening exciting avenues for subsequent research and enabling more sensitivity towards the presence of colour photography in museum archives.

This conference is free of charge for attendees and all presenters have been offered an honorarium. This is made possible thanks to the financial generosity of the Photographic Historical Society of Canada.

PROGRAM

Welcome

Celio Barreto, PHSC Programme Director, PHSC, Toronto

Opening Remarks

Clint Hryhorijiw, PHSC President, Toronto.
Uwe Schögl, ESHPh President, Vienna.

Symposium Introduction

Dr. Hanin Hannouch, Weltmuseum Wien Curator of Analog and Digital Media, Vienna.

Panel 1 Moderator

Sarah Hart, M.A., Carleton University, Ottawa.

Agnes Warburg’s Determination:
Towards a Mastery of Three-Colour Printing
Janine Freeston, Oxford, U.K.

Gustav Fritsch around 1900:
Anthropology and Three-Colour Photography in Imperial Germany
Hanin Hannouch, Weltmuseum Wien, Vienna, Austria.

Instinctive Genius – Frederic Eugene Ives & The Krōmscōp Color Photography System
Rachel Wetzel, Library of Congress, Washington D.C.

Leprosy in Iceland: Karl Grossmann’s Sanger-Shepherd Colour Photographs
Inga Lára Baldvinsdóttir, National Museum in Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland.

Panel 2 Moderator

Dr. Elizabeth Cronin, New York Public Library, NYC.

Frank Hurley and the Color Paget Process
Geoff Barker, State Library, New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Astute Inventions:
Jan Szczepanik’s Colour Textile, Photography and Film
Dominika Sulińska, The Castle Museum in Pszczyna, Poland.

Why in Colour?
Sergej Michalovic Prokudin-Gorskii and his Travels 1908–1918
Rolf Sachsse, Universität Bonn, Germany.

Harald Renbjoer’s Three-Colour Photography in Norway
Nils Torske, Levanger, Norway.

For further details please visit the registration site.

Technologies, Expeditions, Empires: Three-Color Photography around 1900 Online Symposium (Zoom) on Friday 29th April 2022, 1 PM Toronto time / 7 PM Vienna time.
