Dear Madame Anna Auer, I still remember gladly the unexpected visit that we made in 2005, your kindness, your house full of books and photographs, my son translating our conservation. The fact of life turned me away from the historical photograph research, yet this fact made me regain my old passion for photography itself and, perhaps, they will become a museum subject itself. I photograph in the old way, but I can’t forget the million of images that I collected in over 25 years of work. Best wishes for the future studies and research in the area of the history of photography.

Liebe Frau Auer, viel zu spät, aber trotzdem tief empfunden, möchte ich mein Bedauern darüber aussprechen, dass Sie nicht länger “unsere Präsidentin” sein werden. Wie Sie wissen, habe ich Sie immer in hohem Maße geschätzt und als würdige Repräsentantin der Gesellschaft erlebt. Hoffe sehr, dass Sie weiter präsent sein werden und sozusagen nur die Rolle wechseln. Denke wirklich, dass Anna Auer und Fotografie in Österreich sinnvoll verknüpft sind. – Zur ESHPh Sitzung am 4. November kann ich, wie sich dieser Tage herausgestellt hat, leider doch nicht kommen. Ich unterstütze die Wahl von Dr. Schoegl zum neuen Präsidenten der ESHPh, da ich ihn als kompetenten Fotohistoriker kennen gelernt habe, der sich mit Elan dem Anliegen der fotografischen Forschung widmet. Mit ganz herzlichen Grüßen an Sie und vielem Dank für alle Unterstützung, die ich von Ihnen erfahren habe.

Er engagiert sich ja bereits seit langem für die Anliegen der ESHPh und ist durch seine berufliche Position erfahren im Umgang mit Institutionen und Netzwerken und ein Experte im Bereich Fotografie. Aus meiner Sicht ist er sicher der ideale Kandidat. Auch weil ihr beide schon lange gut miteinander kooperiert. Nochmals alles Gute!

Dear Anna, thank you for sending me a copy of your announcement dated 8 October of your retirement as President of the ESHPh. As you say, “many of you will remember, the situation at the start of my presidency in 2001 was anything but rosy”. Indeed: for I was certainly one who at that time thought that way. I see that I wrote to you in January 2001 when it was expected that the society would have to close, that “I would certainly like it to continue, but at the same time feel the decline has gone past a point of no return”. But, on the contrary, by your strong initiative and determination in Vienna the
ESHPh was truly revitalized.

Dear Anna, only yesterday I got your letter in which you write that you are planning to resign from your position as president of the ESHPh. Though you are confident that you are doing the right step, I personally feel that the ESHPh is about to lose one of its coherent, lucid, pensive and yet sensitive voice I have ever met. Not only that were, and still to this day, able to lead and unite polar ideas and desires which inhabit organizations such as the ESHPh; you were endowed with an innate charisma, attracting people to the sole cause of building up the European Society you skilfully have in your bare hands engraved you name in it. . . Being able to adjust and accept the other is a testimony to your endless efforts to build an array of scholars dedicated to the history of photography as well as to photography as such The PhotoResearcher you initiated is highly appreciated as well as the 30 Years Jubilee Book. Add to this the numerous conferences you skilfully have materialized, and the new members you have recruited – you can proudly say to yourself ‘I am part of it’. And indeed you are part of it.

Mrs Président, Dear Anna, merci pour votre lettre du 8 Octobre par laquelle vous nous informez de votre décision de mettre fin à votre mandat de Présidente de l’ESHPh. Puisque, comme vous l’écrivez, Il y a un moment opportun dans l’existence, c’est alors celui choisi pour vous remercier de tant d’efforts, d’enthousiasme et de travail à la tête de l’ESHPh et vous exprimer toute ma reconnaissance. – Nous n’avons pas en souvent l’occasion de nous voir mais sachez que j’ai eu plaisir, à chacune de nos rencontres, de bavarder avec vous et d’échanger nos vues sur notre travail respectif. – Je ne doute pas que Mr. Schögl sera à même de poursuivre au mieux votre tâche. – Je vous souhaite une heureuse “retraite”, je l’écris entre guillemets car je sais que vous ne manquerez pas d’activités relatives à la photographie. J’espère pouvoir vous recevoir bientôt dans le Musée de la Photographie entièrement rénové.
